Top 10 Tips for Traveling Abroad

Visiting faraway destinations can be an incredible experience, an opportunity to truly experience a new culture. However, traveling abroad can also be stressful, especially if it is your first adventure abroad. Here are the top 10 tips to make the experience as smooth as possible.

Travel in comfort ... or as much as possible. The most painful part of traveling abroad is the long flight abroad. However, there are things you can do to make it as easy as possible. Try to get the best possible seat on the flight. If you think you will have to get up frequently, that may mean sitting in an aisle seat. If you plan to sleep the entire flight, you may want to snag a window seat. Bring a book, a blanket, a pillow, and eye covers. It may seem surreal to have only a couple of hours of darkness on the trail. Covering your eyes will allow you to turn off the lights earlier and sleep more peacefully.

Appropriate documentation. Each country has different entry requirements. Make sure to check the entry requirements for your destination and start with the necessary documentation as soon as possible. It can be stressful waiting for documentation, so do yourself a favor and don't put it off.

Vaccines. See the vaccination suggestions for the country you will be visiting. Talk to your doctor about what you may need.

Health things. Check with your health insurance company to determine if you will be protected while abroad. It may be necessary to purchase additional coverage. Don't risk it and go เที่ยวต่างประเทศ without the protection of health coverage.

Money things. Don't count on your debit card working while you're abroad. Make sure you have a credit card, even if it's only for emergencies. When exchanging money, look for a bank or company that specializes in currency exchange, as exchange houses at airports apply additional fees.

Electronics. If you can't live without your razor or hair dryer, you'll need to buy an adapter before you go. Even if you can locate one abroad, the prices are likely to rise much more than what you would find at home.

Food. The food that you are going to experience abroad will be different from what you are used to. Period. However, different doesn't necessarily have to be a bad thing. Just make sure you know what you're ordering to avoid a potentially embarrassing situation where your stomach can't handle your pick.

Culture. Do your best to respect the culture and acclimatize to it as much as possible. Read a little about the culture before you leave so you feel as comfortable as possible.

Idiom. While no one expects you to learn a completely new language, you can try learning a few phrases that will be especially helpful. Phrases like asking where the bathroom is or asking for directions will increase your sense of control.

Souvenirs. Make sure the items you choose to take home fit in your carry-on or suitcase. If you fall in love with an item that doesn't fit in your luggage, you might consider shipping it. Just be prepared as this can get a bit pricey!
